Since the Gill Sensor employs a permanent magnet sensor, it only needs power for measurement and display, and therefore does not need to be powered continuously.
The enclosure has a micro-switch that powers the Gill Sensor when the enclosure door opens. This way the battery life of the Gill Sensor with 4 x 9V alkaline batteries is in excess of 6 months. With a larger Li-Ion battery pack, the expected battery life is two years.
